AirTran Airlines and American Airlines announce new and enhanced flights from Pittsburgh to DFW and Chicago

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) - December 2009 - Not every airline is canceling their Pittsburgh flights: AirTran Airways and American Airlines are introducing new and enhanced services.

The biggest news is from American, which will add three daily nonstop flights to Chicago O’Hare Airport beginning April 6, 2010. American will also enhance its nonstop Pittsburgh-to-Dallas/Ft. Worth service by flying MD-80s on its three daily round trip flights beginning in April 2010. Currently, American offers three daily nonstop flights from Pittsburgh to Chicago, with the new service the airline will have a total of six daily round trip nonstop flights. AirTran Airways has also announced a new nonstop daily flight to Orlando, Florida on December 17.This new flight will be the third AirTran flight to Orlando from Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh International Airport Raises On-Site Parking Rates

Pittsburgh International Airport quietly raises its on-site parking rates

Pittsburgh International Airport (March 2, 2009) -- In case you hadn't noticed, those in charge of Pittsburgh International Airport parking have very quietly raised the parking rates. Shhhh ... they don't want you to know. There is no mention of it in the news area of the Pittsburgh International Airport web site, just a change they hope you won't notice on the airport parking web page and at the airport parking lot. Rates have been raised for short term parking (from $1/1st hour, $3/each add'l hour, $20/day to $1/1st hour, $3/each add'l hour, $21/day) and extended parking ($6.75/day to $8/day). Long term parking rates remain unchanged ($1.50/hr, $11/day). So essentially the only people who will really be effected by this are those that are trying to save a little money by parking in extended parking. Thanks! It's amazing how the powers that be have let Pittsburgh International Airport go from a hub with hundreds of flights a day to a pitiful excuse for a big city airport with only a fraction of that number of daily flights, and few cities served by nonstop flights. It's great to have to waste the entire day traveling, pretty much anywhere that you chose to go except maybe the major hubs. We always find this to be quite an enigma - city government wants to draw businesses here, but what business would want to set up its home in a city poorly served by airlines? I think we have seen the answer .... and we appreciate this last little change to show us how much you really care. I know it's just a few bucks, but it's the thought that counts. No, really, keep up the good work!

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) – January 21, 2009 – Four airlines have added fights to meet the demand of Pittsburgh Steelers fans heading to Super Bowl XLIII in Tampa. JetBlue, Myrtle Beach Direct Air, Southwest and USA3000 have added flights from Pittsburgh International Airport to Tampa in days prior to February 2, 2009 game. Myrtle Beach Direct Air’s flight will land at nearby St. Petersburg, Fla.

Things to do at the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) During A Flight Delay or Layover

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) Restaurants, Shops, Work Spaces and other Amenities

We at eXpect delaYs have a few suggestions for things to do at the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) when you have a flight delay, layover or are waiting for a flight.

1. We like to grab a drink and sometimes a snack at the Sam Adams Brewhouse. There is one on PIT Concourse B about midway down, and one on PIT Concourse C. Both are pretty small, but have a few Sam Adams beers on tap, as well as other bottled beers. They are not full-fledge airport restaurants, but they do have a small menu for snacks. One thing that may bother some people and attract others is the these are some of the only places that allow smoking in the airport, so smoke is often in the air. So if you want to smoke this is the place to go, but if you don't, be aware before you sit down. This may have changed as Pittsburgh and the airport become more smoke-free, but when I was last there smoking was still allowed.

2. You can usually find a seat in the Pittsburgh International Airport food court area (just to your left as you come off the escalators from the train, in the "Core" area) to eat and spread out a little to get work done. There are more seats available than you see at first glance, as they go behind the vendors where you can sit by a window to look at the planes, as well as in front of the stores back towards PIT Concourse C.

3. Pittsburgh International Airport has a fairly large "AirMall", which contains quite a few shops where you can while away the time shopping while you wait for your flight. You can pick up those electronic devices or accessories you may have left behind at Airport Wireless / Palm Store, buy some reasonably priced fashion accessories at Bijou Terner, men's clothing at Brooks Brothers, women's "clothing" at Victoria's Secret, a cool gadget at Brookstone, chocolate for yourself or someone else at Godiva, or exotic personal care products at L'Occitane en Provence, just to name a few. You can pick up sports paraphernalia for your favorite Pittsburgh team at the newly opened SportZburgh on concourse B. Of course there are also newstands and bookstores, sunglasses shops and drugstores, too. The AirMall is mostly centered in the PIT "core" area (the center of the "hub" that the concourses radiate from at the top of the escalators coming from the transit which brought you from the main terminal) as well as extending into the adjacent concourses. You can't miss it!

4. If you are in need of a little relaxation, and would like a massage, facial or manicure while you wait for your flight, head on over to XpresSpa on both PIT Concourse A and B.

5. Some other Pittsburgh International Airport restaurants that offer fast dining are Qdoba, Au Bon Pain, and Garden Gazebo (serving salads, wraps, etc), all located in the PIT main food court (an Au Bon Pain is also located on PIT Concourse D and in the PIT Landside Terminal). Of course there are a few McDonalds (food court & PIT Concourse B), too, if you can't start your day without your Egg McMuffin!

6. Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) provides free wireless internet access, so you can get some work done or surf the web or catch up on email while you wait for your flight.

7. If you have to mail something, Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) offers a full service post office! It is located on concourse D.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) - SportZburgh is a brand new sporting apparel and gifts shop at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). The store, located in PIT Concourse B, offers a full variety of black and gold sports apparel and gifts. SportZburgh carries Pittsburgh Steelers, Penguins and Pirates gear. SportzBurgh occupies the former Pajama Shop space on PIT concourse B. Meanwhile, Pajama Shop is now located in the Pittsburgh International Airport Center Core.

A place for Military Personnel and their families officially opens at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) - November 18, 2008 -- The formal opening of the Pittsburgh International Airport Military & Family Courtesy Center is today. It is located on Concourse A and provides a place for military personnel and their families to wait for their flights. The space has been walled off and turned into an 1,100-square-foot lounge outfitted with couches, easy chairs, books, magazines and a TV.

Servicemen and women, and relatives who receive gate passes from an airline, can use the space between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. weekdays, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends.

The center will provide workstations, television and an area for military personnel to spend times with their families. It also will serve light snacks. It located just past Gate A4.

The two trains which carry passengers from the main terminal to the gates at Pittsburgh International Airport will be undergoing renovations which may impact passengers and cause delays. Allow a little extra time until the renovations are completed, which is anticipated to be before the Thanksgiving travel season begins. Remember - if you eXpect delaYs, you can beat them!

Pittsburgh International Airport -- PITTSBURGH, PA – Beginning Monday, November 3, the Allegheny County Airport Authority will continue to make improvements to the two “people mover” trains at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). These trains, which are located beyond the security check point, transport air travelers to and from the Airside Terminal, AIRMALL and airline gates.

These enhancements will consist of the installation of new flooring in each of the six train cars. There are three cars per train. During this upgrade, it is anticipated that a maximum of two cars out of the six will be out of service at any given time. The plan is to have these improvements completed prior to the Thanksgiving holiday travel rush.

Currently, both trains are running in the peak travel periods between the hours of 6:00 to 7:30 am and 3:00 to 7:30 pm. Operating four out of six train cars during those times may impact the traveling public. The Allegheny County Airport Authority is advising passengers to allow a little extra time for checking in and getting to their gates. Airport employees who work in the Airside Terminal should also allow extra time.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) Sees Further Decrease in Overall Traffic and Has Changes In Florida Routes

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) traffic overall deceased yet again when compared to last year, although 12 of 13 airlines had an increase in passengers while one (guess who ;-) ) had a 29.5% decrease. There's some news for those traveling to Florida. US Airways is eliminating all nonstop flights from Pittsburgh to Florida (isn't that nice ...) but AirTran Airways is stepping up and adding non-stops to Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale and Ft. Myers,, FL.

PITTSBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (PIT) (September 4, 2008) – Combined traffic for 12 of the 13 airlines serving Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) increased by 3.0 percent in July 2008 compared to July 2007, according to the July 2008 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared for the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Year-to-date figures show those same airlines have reported a 10.5 percent increase in traffic through July 2008 compared to July 2007. One airline of course had decreased traffic, our main carrier, US Airways, whose continually decreasing flights are singlehandedly making Pittsburgh an increasingly poorly connected city.

A total of 823,510 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in July 2008, a 10.4 percent decrease compared to July 2007 (823,510/919,301; 10.4 percent) as those gains were not enough to offset the losses in traffic posted by US Airways (267,859/380,018; 29.5 percent); Southwest (134,362/139,134; 3.4 percent); American (41,961/44,480; 5.7percent); JetBlue (21,300/29,243; 27.2 percent) and Midwest (8,357/12,690; 34.1 percent).

The air service announcement continues what is a good year at Pittsburgh International Airport for AirTran. Through July the airline has seen its traffic increase almost 30 percent compared to 2007. AirTran offers five non stop departures a day from PIT to its hub in Atlanta and two to Orlando.

Nine airlines increase passenger traffic
Myrtle Beach Direct Air announces more flights

PITTSBURGH, PA (June 5, 2008) – Nine airlines at Pittsburgh International Airport (www.FlyPittsburgh.com) reported an increase in passenger traffic in April 2008 compared to April 2007, according to the April 2008 Scheduled Airline Traffic Report, prepared by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Of those, AirTran Airways led the charge with an impressive 40 percent growth – an increase of more than 13,000 passengers.

AirTran had a total of 47,937 passengers in April making it the fifth-busiest airline at Pittsburgh International Airport for the month, accounting for 6.6 percent of the total passengers. Compared to April 2007, AirTran gained a total of 13,704 passengers (47,937/34,233; 40.0 percent increase).

AirTran added additional Florida flights to Ft. Myers, Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa and Orlando. The airline has reported growth over each of the past 15 months. “AirTran’s success represents the positive changes we are seeing at Pittsburgh International Airport,” said Allegheny County Airport Authority Chief Executive Director Bradley D. Penrod. “AirTran was our first low cost carrier here and its persistence is paying off. Additionally, other carriers have realized increased passenger numbers.”

Another such airline is Myrtle Beach Direct Air. While its total passenger traffic at Pittsburgh International Airport is modest, Myrtle Beach Direct Air reported a 10.1 percent increase in April (2,013/1,828; 10.1 percent). The airline has just added two flights per week beginning in June.

Pittsburgh’s response to Myrtle Beach Direct Air’s three-day-per-week service has been so positive that they are adding on two more days bringing the service up to 5 times per week. “Myrtle Beach Direct Air has increased service since starting at the airport in March 2007,” Penrod said. “Although it is a niche market, it is providing an important service to our customers.”

Seven other airlines reported increases in traffic as well. Southwest increased by 8.8 percent (122,357/112,449; 8.8 percent); United had an 11.9 percent gain (65,215/58,297; 11.9 percent); Continental reported a 6.7 percent increase (43,844/41,094; 6.7 percent); Northwest grew by 6.1 percent (42,773/40,312; 6.1 percent); USA 3000 reported the largest growth at 40.3 percent (18,408/13,121; 40.3 percent); Midwest had 2.8 percent increase (7,647/7,440; 2.8 percent); and Air Canada traffic increased by 31.8 percent (3,898/2,957; 31.8 percent)

A total of 726,634 scheduled passengers were enplaned and deplaned at the airport in April 2008, a 15.6 percent decrease compared to April 2007 (726,634 in April 2008/861,243 in April 2007) as those gains were not enough to offset the losses in traffic posted by US Airways (241,952/408,167; 40.7 percent); Delta (76,969/79,461; 3.1 percent); American (35,960/40,113; 10.4 percent) and JetBlue (17,661/21,771; 18.9 percent).

Year-to-date figures show traffic is 10.3 percent lower than the same time period in 2007 (2,786,970/3,105,501; 10.3 percent).

PITTSBURGH, PA (May 9, 2008) – The Allegheny County Airport Authority has been notified by the airlines that there are a large number of travelers flying from Pittsburgh International Airport on Monday morning, May 12. If your flight leaves Monday, May 12, between 5 and 9 am at Pittsburgh International Airport, you should arrive at least 90 minutes before your flight. “The increase is most likely due to Mother’s Day, post-Penguins game traffic and business travel. Passengers need to come to the airport early and pack and dress smart to get through the screening process quickly,” stated Bradley D. Penrod, Executive Director, Allegheny County Airport Authority.

Pittsburgh International Airport To Get TSA Self Select Security Screening Lanes

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) will soon implement the TSA's self select security screening lanes. These lanes were designed to help expedite airport security screening for all travelers. Self-Select Lanes are comprised of a series of lanes designated by signage (modeled after ski slope ratings) that directs passengers based on their travel needs and knowledge – Expert (Black Diamond), for the business traveler who flies several times a month; Casual (Blue Square), for passengers that travel less frequently, but are familiar with the security process; and Family/Special Assistance (Green Circle), for passengers traveling with small children or strollers, elderly passengers and passengers who may need special assistance.
